In the world of perfume, sandalwood is that age-old friend who shows up at every gathering with incense and secrets. Across cultures and centuries, this creamy-woody note has whispered its presence in temples and perfumers’ labs alike. We invite you to lean in and inhale the history: every spritz is a sip of spirituality, a drop of decadent mystery. It’s no coincidence that sandalwood’s very name means “wood that cools” in Sanskrit, it is an evergreen hemiparasite prized for its aromatic heartwood. The plant is considered sacred in many traditions, and its fragrance is even believed to carry souls to heaven on the cremation pyre.
This is heritage perfume: for millennia India led the world in sandalwood oil production, making sandalwood the world’s second-costliest wood after African blackwood. Folk lore even hailed sandalwood as the “epitome of excellence,” claiming it perfumed the very axe that cut it down. Today that storied aura still lives on in every rich, woody niche fragrance that harnesses its mystique.
For all its reverence, sandalwood is still a living tree, and now a rare one. Santalum album grows slowly atop host roots, taking decades to build its buttery heartwood. Modern chemistry shows why it smells so special: sandalwood oil is packed with sesquiterpenes. Indian sandalwood oil famously contains around 66–79% santal (versus only ~39% in many Australian sandalwoods, making the Indian wood exceptionally rich. Those heavy santalol molecules also give sandalwood a natural fixative quality, binding lighter notes and stretching a perfume’s longevity (in other words, a drop of it can turn a fleeting spritz into a lingering memory).
Even the labs are in on it: researchers have engineered microbes to brew sandalwood’s signature compounds. But no vat or fermentation can fully mimic the living tree’s soul. And after centuries of harvest, wild S. album now ranks as vulnerable on the IUCN Red list. Inspiring perfumers to plant new groves and use every precious drop wisely.
In the perfume lab, sandalwood is the ultimate anchor. It quietly blends dozens of bright top notes into a single, harmonious melody. Perfumers often describe it as rich, milky and enveloping not sharp or aggressive like some woods. One expert even notes sandalwood’s unique projection: “It is not a pungent or loud woody note; in fact it’s more like a long-distance runner, very tenacious and long lasting” It tiptoes in, then stays for the entire symphony. Quintis sums it up: sandalwood provides a “captivating and long-lasting” base, the very quality perfumers rely on to make fragrances linger.
Our own fragrances showcase sandalwood’s power. In Sur Arize , we explicitly tout it on the label: “sandalwood triggers alertness” alongside bergamot and coconut, while Ambroxan adds a “strong, woody element” to amp up the effect. In practice, Sur Arize pops with citrus at first, then settles into a calm, spicy-woody comfort as it dries down. Ether Woods goes even further into the forest: its base blends “rich tonka bean, earthy patchouli, and creamy sandalwood resting on the strength of cedar, evoking deep woods and romance.
Sandalwood also loves company. Layer it under a chypre or a floral, and it cradles those notes in a soft suede blanket. Add it to citrus or aquatic accords, and suddenly that zest gains sensual depth and longevity. In effect, you’re doing clean perfume layering: all that complexity without any chemical baggage. Try it for yourself, spritz Sur Arize, then add a dash of your favorite summer scent. The sandalwood base will make even a simple cologne feel couture.
