As most of you probably know, in the fragrance industry, there’s a lingering dichotomy between niche and designer perfume. In this article, we aim to explain the actual differences between the two, although we do have a bit of a biais since we’ve sworn fealty to the world of niche perfume. Where every drop is a love letter to craftsmanship, creativity, and that delicious thrill of discovery. Now, get comfortable and allow us to whisk you behind the curtain of niche perfumery.
You have probably heard whispers of “designer vs. niche,” as if it were a grand fragrance duel. Actually, calling something “niche” isn’t about snobbery (though, admittedly, it can be seen as a bit indulgent), but it simply means that the brand behind the scent devotes itself exclusively to perfumes and fragrance treasures, rather than slapping its name on wallets, watches, or even athleisure wear.
Designer perfumes are often the haute couture of branding, fashion houses flexing their global distribution muscles, however, none of those so-called designer perfumes are actually thought out by the designer themselves. Designer perfumes are most times mass-produced, in large volumes. And as global companies do, they must meet the demands of company shareholders and profit margins. Therefore, when buying designer perfume you'll often find it predictable, banal, scents that smell very similar.
Unfortunately, these designer scents are often constructed from ingredients that are mass manufactured where little care is given to the actual product itself or standards of production. Additionally they are often produced by machines and lack the depth of scent, complexity of notes or accompanying back story that you'll find with a niche fragrance.
Unfortunately, these are highly marketed products that have almost lost their sense of being something special because they are available everywhere, worn by everyone and constantly promoted throughout the media.
By contrast, niche fragrances are a unique, in-house perfume produced on a small scale and sold through what is usually the company website or in a few luxury regional niche perfume stores, as we do at Mmoire.
Niche perfumes can only be made by artisan perfumers. Each scent is composed according to strict industry principles using only the highest quality ingredients. These perfumers are hand blended with natural and synthetic ingredients, because as we know at Mmoire, natural isn’t always better. Quality standards for niche perfume are extremely high so you won't get a product that will irritate your skin or contain sub-standard ingredients.
The creation of a niche perfume is often the work of a perfumer-creator, an artist who designs their fragrances like olfactory paintings, at Mmoire, our founder Sophie takes care of this creative process. Unlike the often more commercial and marketing approach of big brands, niche perfume creators focus on the art of perfumery. We take the necessary time to develop sophisticated compositions without worrying about market trends.
Buying a niche perfume is a chance to own a fragrance that other people don't have. It's an artisan product crafted with passion so you get a richer olfactory experience that will last longer and draw plenty of attention for all the right reasons. It's about owning something different that you can't find on every high street. Niche fragrances are crafted, by hand so they cover a greater variety of notes, producing a much wider range of more varied, interesting scents.
If you're buying a scent for yourself or a loved one you'll want to splash out on a special, unique, high-quality niche fragrance.
At Mmoire we offer that experience with our two creations Sur Arize and Ether Woods, as we look to the future, we can expect to see more people choosing to wear niche perfume rather than designer fragrances because of its higher quality, limited availability and superior sensory experience.
